What do our deacons do?
The diaconate focuses on offering the ministry of mercy to the church and community. They serve those needs on our behalf but are also responsible for helping to organize our participation.
In compliance with our denomination’s standards, deacons are elected by the church and ordained. Other men and women assist in the ministry of the diaconate and are commissioned for service.
The diaconate meets monthly to consider requests for assistance and to plan for and to communicate needs to the rest of us. They have established policies for maintaining a healthy balance for addressing those needs without enabling irresponsibility. They also work hard to coordinate with services already provided in our community through other agencies and churches. Their involvement includes areas such as housing and heating, medical care, food, counseling, transportation, repairs, etc.
As they demonstrate the love of Christ through such help, they often are also able to pray for people and offer the hope of the Gospel and scripture.
